The Löhrtor was one of the three large gates of the Siegen city fortifications of the then Nassau city of Siegen , now part of North Rhine-Westphalia . It was located on the southern side of the old town on the Siegberg, immediately south of the confluence of Kohlbettstrasse and today's Löhrstrasse .

history

In 1338 the gate was first mentioned under the name "Wetzlarer Pforte". The current Löhrstrasse leading through the gate was also called differently. It was mentioned in 1404 as "wetslergasse" and was first called "loirgasse" in 1455. This name has remained to this day and only changed between the names "-gasse" and "-straße".

The name "Löhrtor" has only been known since around 1600. It comes from the local tanner or lion trade , which had a great boom in the second half of the 15th century. Because of their water requirements, the tanneries mostly settled near the city gate outside the city walls, as the river Weiß runs a few meters south of its location . The names of the neighboring streets Lohgraben, Gerbereiweg and Häutebachweg give further references to this trade . The city gate kept the name Wetzlarer Tor for a long time, as it was on an important road leading towards Wetzlar.

In the 17th century the gate to the bulwark was expanded with stronger fortifications. From around 1800 the city's fortifications began to deteriorate. The gate was also affected, in 1893 the Löhrtor was demolished. In 1962 the nearby high school Am Löhrtor , founded in 1536, was named after the gate.
