Løsetstranda's burial ground

Løsetstranda is a stretch of coast on the western Norwegian island of Gurskøya near Moltustranda in Herøy municipality . With its 63 Løsetstranda has cairn tombs of the largest Bronze Age burial sites in Norway .

The barrows are made of stones found on the beach. The oldest date from the early Bronze Age. During excavations in one of the large stone graves, shards of asbestos ceramics were found that were dated to the younger Bronze Age or the older Iron Age . Towards the end of the older Iron Age, further graves were created around the existing burial mounds. This is how the Løsetstranda burial ground was created as it is today.

The earliest historical source from 1603 tells of the Løset farm, which was destroyed by a rock fall towards the end of the 18th century. Traces of old agriculture can still be found between the stone hills.

The prehistoric cultural monuments in Løsetsranda are under monument protection. The burial ground is on the Norwegian Council of Culture's list of the most valuable monuments in the country.
