Luding Bridge

The Luding Bridge ( Tibetan : ལྕགས་ ཟམ , legend after Wylie : lcags-zam ; Chinese  泸定桥 , Pinyin Lúdìng Qiáo ) in Luding County (Cagsam), Sichuan, China, is a chain bridge over the Dadu River ( Dadu Hey ).

The bridge was built in 1706. Its span is 100 m, it is 2.8 meters wide and about 14 meters above the water. It consists of a total of 13 iron chains, each of which weighs 2.5 tons, and which are anchored in huge stone pillars. Nine chains drawn parallel from bank to bank are covered with wooden planks, 2 chains on each side serve as railings. At the beginning of the 20th century, the bridge was renovated, reinforced and supplemented by the side chains.

Way of the Long March

The capture and crossing of the bridge by soldiers of the People's Liberation Army at the end of May 1935 is one of the great, legendary heroic deeds of the Long March . This enabled the troops to escape pursuing Kuomintang troops.

The bridge has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-22) since 1961 .
