Lühhike öppetus
Lühhike öppetus ( Estonian for short instruction , according to modern spelling 'Lühike õpetus'), was the first periodical in Estonian.
It was published by Peter Ernst Wilde in Põltsamaa in 1766–1767 and described various simple medical techniques that farmers could use in the countryside.
The full title of the paper was Lühhike õppetus mis sees moned head rohhud taeda antakse, ni hästi innimeste kui ka veiste haigusse ning viggaduste vasto , in German roughly: Brief instruction on the treatment of diseases and injuries in humans and cattle .
It was printed weekly, each issue had 4 pages, and a total of 41 issues appeared. August Wilhelm Hupel was responsible for the translation of the original German text into Estonian.
rating
Lühhike öppetus did not contain any news and therefore, despite its format, cannot be classified as a newspaper . Some sources refer to it as a magazine , others as a delivery work or even as a 41-volume book. The Tarto maa rahva Näddali-Leht , first published in 1807, is generally regarded as the first Estonian newspaper .
