August Wilhelm Hupel (* 25. February 1737 in Buttelstedt , † January 6 jul. / 18th January  1819 greg. In White Stone ) was Baltic German pastor in Oberpahlen , journalist, regional historian, linguist, priest and important writer in Livonia of the Age of Enlightenment .

Life

Hupel was born into a pastor's family. He first attended the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar and then the University of Jena . From 1757 he lived in Livonia, where he became pastor in Oberpahlen in 1764; from 1804 he lived in Weißenstein.

In 1766/67 he translated for Lühhike öppetus , the first regular publication in the Estonian language, edited by Peter Ernst Wilde . In 1771 he published the medicine book Arsti ramat nende juhhatamisseks kes tahtvad többed ärra-arvada ning parrandada (Handbook of Medical Diagnostics ...). In 1780 Hupel published the Estonian language theory for both main dialects, the Reval and the Dörpt, together with a complete dictionary ; the first edition contained around 17,000 words with descriptions and information on the origin, the second edition in 1820 already comprised around 20,000 words.
