LITE leather

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LITE (Low Impact To Environment) is a certificate for environmentally friendly leather. The LITE label can be worn on all leather products that are manufactured with particularly low energy and water consumption. Certification is based on a “CO 2 footprint”, which documents the carbon dioxide emissions per square meter of leather produced. The LITE standards are based on calculations by the BLC Leather Technology Center on the average energy and water consumption in the industry. LITE products are made with around 35 percent less energy and 50 percent less water. Shoe manufacturers such as Timberland, New Balance, Hush Puppies, Reef, Simple Shoes or Keen have brought shoes with LITE leather onto the market. The label is supported by the German Investment and Development Company, a company of the KfW banking group , with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). LITE was initiated by the German-Chinese leather manufacturer ISA Tan Tec.
