Sek LOSO - concert on February 10th, 2006 in Mannheim

Sek Loso - childhood

Seksan Sookpimay was born on August 7, 1974 in Nakhon Ratchasima (or Korat for short) in Thailand. He grew up in a humble family of rice farmers. Sek stayed with his family in Korat until he was 12 years old, then he moved to Bangkok to see his aunt, where he was able to work in her jewelry studio. Sek also found work in an air conditioning factory. When he got the chance, he listened to great American musicians. Sek loved Kurt Cobain and John Lennon - two completely different styles of music. But what really inspired him were two music tapes he owned at the time. One was an album by Guns N 'Roses, the other by Carabao and Sek knew he wanted to be a rock star.

Rise to fame

Inspired by his favorite artists, Sek bought a cheap guitar for 600 baht from his savings. But when his aunt found out about it, she threw him out of her house without further ado. Sek learned to play the guitar himself and managed to perform in various clubs and events. At the young age of 17 he managed to get an engagement at the Austin Pub in Bangkok, one of the best music pubs at the time. Soon he took over the management of the house band and from then on played regularly to Thai rock, Nirvana, Green Day, Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

Loso

Sek founds his own band in Bangkok called LoSo. The band name is a play on words low-so (low society) Thai dialect for lower social class (the upper society was called Hi-So) and reflects its origin from humble, rural conditions. The band took Loso as a "family name" - hence Sek Loso.

Sek wrote ten songs. Together with drummer Kittisak "Yai" Khotkam and bassist Apirath "Rath" Sukkhajitr they created a demo tape in one night and sent it to Asanee Chotikul from the popular Thai rock duo Asanee - Wasan. The first studio album "Lo-Society" was created from the demo tape in 1996 on Asanee's indie record label MoreMusic and was released by GMM Grammy, Thailand's largest music label. Over 1.5 million records were sold.

Celebrity status

Loso released eight more albums. The band's most popular song is "Som Sarn" (Thai for "hopeless"), which features an acoustic guitar intro and is widely recognized throughout Thailand. Another hit becomes “Pantip” with the refrain “mai pai Pantip” (“no go Pantip” or “Go not into the Pantip”). Sek's song is about a man who takes his girlfriend on a shopping trip to the World Trade Center, MBK Center and Siam Square, but not to Pantip Plaza, because he wants to avoid an ex-girlfriend who broke his heart because she has a business there opened.

The band stayed together for the time being until Apirath was replaced by Nattaphon "Klang" Suntharaanu. Klang played bass for the albums “Rock & Roll” and “Losoland” and went on a concert tour with the band. Apirath returned and stayed with it until it was dissolved.

A karaoke VCD with the music videos of the songs was released for almost every album. Through the music videos and his appearance as an advertising idol for the M-150 Energy drink, Sek Loso - usually wearing dark sunglasses - achieved cult status in Thailand. His fame even increased with a supporting role - still as an advertising idol for M-150 - in the Thai action film Tom-Yum-Goong. The song for the M-150 commercial "The Yang Thai" became a hit.

International career

end of an era

After the release of the “Loso Concert For Friends” VCD and CD in 2002, the trio decided to take a break. They had achieved all kinds of goals in the Thai music industry and it was time for something bigger. Rath and Yai formed a new band called Fahrenheit. In 2003 Sek released his debut solo album “7. August "and 2004 in a duet with the pop and Lukthung veteran Bird McIntyre another hit album" Bird - Sek ". The two gave several sold out concerts at Bangkok's Impact Arena.

England calls

Sek developed aspirations that go beyond the Thai music scene. In Thai music terminology this is called “Go Inter”. He read through the biographies of his rock idol Jimi Hendrix and decided to achieve international fame. That's why he wanted to go to England, like Jimi Hendrix back then. In 2004 he went to London and took courses at the ESOL English School. After 6 months of intensive study, he spoke upper-class English with a British accent. Sek began to write songs in English and placed an ad in the NME where he was looking for a bass player and drummer to form a new band. Candidates who signed up had to play the entire Jimi Hendrix album "Are You Experienced?"

The new Loso

Sek toured with his new band in Thailand with drummer Eric Lavansch ("Eric Loso") and Anthony Wilson ("Eddie Loso") on bass. During this tour sponsored by M-150, they were accompanied by the Thai band Sillyfools.

With the help of Tim Carr, an American writer and former A&R executive who lives in Thailand and has worked with bands like The Beastie Boys, Megadeth, Ash and Cornershop, a demo tape of the band was sent to some producers. The first to reply was Owen Morris, who produced albums with Ash, Oasis and The Verve. Morris was flown to Thailand by GMM Grammy and presented to Sek. His enthusiasm was overwhelming when he saw the band live at the Pattaya International Music Festival 2004 in front of an audience of 50,000 people. Morris had spontaneously produced the three songs "I Wish I Could", "I Just Wonder" and "Fly Away". This was followed by “Love Is My Religion” and two rave-up impressions in the recording sessions for Sek's debut album in English “For God's Sake”, which was published in December 2007 as an online download from iTunes. The Thai tracks “Chun mai sum-oiy”, “Karm chun pai korn” and a punk version of the earlier hit “Pantip” were also recorded with Owen Morris and published in the 2005 compilation “Sek Loso - The Collection”.

Owen Morris brought the former Oasis member, rhythm guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs to Bangkok and introduced him to the band. Bonehead loved the sound of the band, played some tracks with them and stayed for a few concerts. Eric and Eddie returned to their families in England for a well-deserved break. Eddie Loso left the band after filming a Yamaha commercial with Sek in London.

Eric returned to Thailand with new bassist Rob Hudson and Bonehead to mix the album "For God's Sake". At the beginning of January 2005 they traveled to England with Sek to give the album the finishing touches in Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. There they were invited to play at the Glastonbury Rock Festivals and the Patti Smith Meltdown Festival. After the recordings, Rob Hudson decided to leave the band. He didn't want to stay away from England for a long time as would have been necessary for Sek's tours in Thailand and the USA.

In January and February 2005, Sek undertook a very successful tour through Europe with the Thai musicians Tom, Tu and Tok (rhythm guitar, drums and bass guitar). Back in Thailand, around two dozen open-air concerts followed in March and April - all with the Thai band - in Isarn, one was in Nong Khai, then Phuket followed in southern Thailand (here Sek donated the income for those injured in the tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004), followed by Krabi, Hat Yai, Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Chumphon. The tour - for an audience of almost 150,000 enthusiastic visitors - ended in Bangkok at the Hollywood Awards. Video recordings of nine concerts were cut by Thai television into a one-hour Sek Loso concert show and broadcast on May 1st.

The band needed a new bass player and so Chris Borsberry (a friend of Eric - they played together in school and in teenage bands) was brought to Bangkok and successfully tested by Sek. Sek met Chris while filming in London for the Yamaha motorcycle advertisement. At that time Chris was spontaneously integrated by the producer into the advertising film as the “devil's guitarist” with the Union Jack guitar. The next day Chris played in the studio and two days later with the band at the Bangkok Music Festival 2005 in front of a large audience.

After the death of his father, Sek composed the song “Tiger” in his memory, which was released as a single in a limited edition of only 100 CDs in June 2006, together with a bonus CD from the Pattaya Music Festival 2004. The song “Tiger "Was also included in the English album" For God's Sake ".

In the summer of 2005, Sek Loso went on an international tour with the British band for the first time. They played at major rock festivals including South By Southwest (Austin, Texas, USA), The Glastonbury Festival (England) and Patti Smith's Meltdown Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The rhythm guitarist Bonehead left the band during the US tour and Sek immediately had to fly in his long-time guitarist Tom from Thailand. The Thai Tom (Vorabut Tiaprasert) is an excellent guitarist and not just a rhythm player. He played together with Sek at the biggest open-air rock / pop concert in the history of Thailand against music piracy in August 2002 on Sanam Luang Square in Bangkok. Likewise with Sek's studio albums “7. August "(2003)," The Collection "(2004)," Black & White "(2006) and the anniversary album" 10 Years Rock "(2007). You can also see Tom Loso on the respective music videos for the karaoke VCDs. Tom was there at all of the big concerts, e.g. B. Bird - Sek (July 2004).

Bonehead (Paul Arthurs) played a few more times as a guest musician, including on December 20, 2005 in the garden at Central World Plaza in Bangkok.

The band gave their first concert in the Middle East on January 27, 2006, in Manama, Bahrain at the Delmon International Hotel. This was followed on April 25th by the M-150 sponsored “Sood Chewit Khon Thai” concert in Bangkok's Impact Arena together with other Thai bands such as Big Ass, Bodyslam, Lanna Commins and Potato. Highlights of this event were released on VCD and DVD.

Ramakien A Rak Opera in New York

Sec and band, along with an all-star contingent of Thai artists, took part in the rock opera - a reference to the Ramakien, a national epic - from 28-30. July 2006 at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York. Sek in the main role of Phra Rama, Noi from the group Pru as Hanuman. The first performance was disturbed by an argument between Sek and Noi in which Sek gently hit Noi on the head with a shoe. The dispute - originally triggered by Noi - continued backstage. Sek refused to continue playing in production and so the rhythm guitarist Tom Loso took over the main role of Phra Rama for the remaining performances.

present

The band is touring Thailand to promote their new album "Black & White" and a concert will be broadcast on Channel 7 Thai television. Former bassist Apirath Sukkhajitr plays as a guest musician at some gigs. He will permanently replace Chris Borsberry in late October 2006.

A compilation CD, VCD and DVD called "10 Years Rock" will be released in November 2006. The band continues to tour mainly in Thailand until May 2007. This is followed by a six month break. The concert tour will resume in December 2007 with the new bassist Pradit Worasuttipisit (Dit Loso), who will replace Apirath Sukkhajitr (Rath Loso).

In February 2008 the band is busy recording a new Thai album. Sek Loso stays in England for several months, where some videos are being shot for the new album. The publication is being postponed again and again until it finally appears in stores at the end of May 2009. The album with 14 new songs is called "Sek Loso".

In April 2009 Sek Loso and Aed Carabao sing together about a Harley Ride, the highway, freedom and joie de vivre ... "Peua Chii-wit Dtit Lor" เพื่อ ชีวิต ติด ล้อ. The song will be released on the new Carabao album "Hoh", Track 05 (CD + VCD April 2009 Warner Music Thailand). Sek appears as a surprise guest at the Carabao concert in the Impact Arena on May 31, 2009.

Also in April 2009, Sek Loso produced the all-star project “Peua Prat-tet Thai” เพื่อ ประเทศไทย (For Thailand), a song about the current political situation and called for a united and united Thailand together with other greats from the music scene like Aed Carabao , Tik Shiro, Gob Taxi, Joey Boy, Amphol Lampoon, Billy Ogan, Micro, Big Ass and Noi Pru. In the studio, Sek reconciles with his colleague Noi Pru, who had been at odds since New York. Thai television also provides information about this.

The band is touring in Thailand and a big concert "12 Years of Sek Loso Jai Sang Maa" is announced for June 20, 2009 in the Impact Arena in Bangkok. Then Sek Loso and the band will go on a European tour in July and August 2009. France, Germany, Norway, Holland and Switzerland are on the tour list.
