LOTAR Eilat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LOTAR Eilat ( Hebrew לוטיר אילת), Unit 7707, is a 1974 founded special unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) whose job it is to the safety of residents and tourists from Eilat against terrorism to protect. Because of its remoteness from the country's major urban centers and its proximity to the borders between Israel and Egypt and Israel and Jordan , this city is a very susceptible and vulnerable place to terrorist attacks.

The name is the combination of the acronym LOTAR for Lochama Be'Terror ( Hebrew לוחמה בטרור, Counter-Terrorism) and the city name Eilat, for which the unit was originally responsible.

The unit is the only and at the same time most experienced and capable special unit that specializes in hostage rescue. For all other IDF counter-terrorism units , including Sajeret Matkal (Unit 269) and Shayetet 13 , hostage rescue is only one of their secondary capabilities. The Jechidat Duvdevan (Unit 217) is more focused on covert counter-terrorism operations than on hostage rescue. When a ship is taken hostage, LOTAR Eilat is supported by Schajetet 13 .

Unlike the other special units within the Israeli army, the LOTAR Eilat unit consists exclusively of reservists between the ages of 20 and 60.

Members of the LOTAR Eilat unit are always on alert. After an alarm, they have to be at their location within 7 minutes. You then have a further 7 minutes to make them fully operational. This means that the elite troops are fully ready to fight within 14 minutes.
