Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (“low pathogenic avian influenza ”, abbreviation LPAI) is a mild disease in poultry caused by influenza viruses . A distinction must be made between LPAI and the frequently fatal avian influenza (“bird flu”), which is also referred to in international parlance as HPAI ( Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza ).

LPAI viruses have mutated into HPAI viruses several times - also in Europe. While EU legislation with regard to the HPAI pathogen contains reporting and control regulations, nothing comparable currently exists with regard to the LPAI virus. Animals infected with LPAI viruses are considered suitable for human consumption, as the risk of disease for humans is not known. However, LPAI viruses are potentially dangerous in that a few mutations can turn them into HPAI viruses. In the EU, there is currently a discussion about extending certain protective regulations against HPAI viruses to LPAI viruses.
