LWN.net is an online magazine that mainly deals with topics from the areas of Linux , Unix and Free Software . The so-called Weekly Edition is published once a week as well as additional articles each day, each with a comment option.

Since LWN.net (originally an abbreviation for Linux Weekly News ) was founded in 1998, it has been one of the most important information sites on Linux topics. The online magazine is aimed primarily at people with a technical interest. According to Heise online , LWN is "extremely [respected]" in Linux kernel circles.

While advertising generates only a small part of its revenue, LWN mainly relies on subscribers , i.e. users who pay a monthly fee and receive more up-to-date news (non-subscribers always have to wait a week for an article to become visible) to turn off advertising and get content sent by email .

history

Jonathan Corbet

LWN was founded in 1998 by Jonathan Corbet and Elizabeth Coolbaugh. In May 2002 the page was redesigned, including the option to leave comments. Corbet announced in July 2002 that it was no longer financially possible to continue operating LWN and that LWN should be discontinued. As a result, when numerous readers donated money for the continued operation, a payment model was introduced that allows paying readers earlier access to new articles and has since secured financing.

Employee

There are currently four people writing at LWN, plus a few freelance journalists whose texts are sometimes published. Editor-in-chief is still Jonathan Corbet, other authors are Jake Edge, Rebecca Sobol and Nathan Willis. At times the maintainer of the Linux manpages , Michael Kerrisk, was also part of the editorial team.
