La Chaise is a piece of seating furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948 that is reminiscent of the shape of a chaise longue . The Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra , which also produces other Eames designs, has been producing the design in series since 1991 .

For a competition held by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the two designers were inspired by the sculpture "Floating Figure" by the sculptor Gaston Lachaise and the work of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore . The piece of furniture was the couple's contribution to the Inexpensive Design Contest, shown at the 1949 Modern Living Exhibition at MoMA. Since then, La Chaise has been included in the museum's fund and exhibited in the furniture design department. Other museums with product design exhibitions like the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague also exhibit La Chaise.

The Eames calculated that the seat shell would cost $ 15 to produce and the substructure would cost $ 12. At that time, other designs by the designers were selected for series production. When series production of the La Chaise began in the 1990s after the deaths of both designers, the sales prices were much higher.

The curved, white lacquered fiberglass seat shell with a round recess in the middle rests on five feet made of chrome-plated steel wire, which end in an oak cross. The construction is 87 cm high, 150 cm wide and 90 cm deep. The Eames prototype was made of hard rubber, not fiberglass.

The United States Postal Service issued a special stamp series in 2008 in honor of Charles and Ray Eames. La Chaise was featured on one of these stamps.
