La Fleche (French: 'Arrow', 1889–1916) was a British thoroughbred race horse and a successful broodmare .

After being sold for a record price as a yearling in 1890, she remained undefeated as a two-year-old in 1891. She was victorious in mare races and also beat some of the leading stallions in her age group.

In 1892 she became the dominant three-year-old and won the Fillies' Triple Crown by winning the 1000 Guineas in Newmarket , the Oaks in Epsom and the St Leger in Doncaster . Her only defeat that year was in the derby .

La Fleche was in training for two more seasons. She won such important races as the Liverpool Autumn Cup in 1893, the Ascot Gold Cup in 1894 and the Champion Stakes at her last performance. She won a total of sixteen races, with twenty-four starts. Later she became a successful and important broodmare.

origin

Anglophone writers often struggled with their names, which resulted in numerous spelling variants, for example Lafleche, La Flêche, La Fléche and La Flèche (the supposedly correct version).

La Fleche was just over 160 cm tall. She was drawn into the Royal Studs at Hampton Court and born on March 10, 1889. She was a strikingly beautiful foal and received a lot of attention at the auction on June 28, 1890 in Bushey Paddocks. Lord Marcus Beresford bought La Fleche for Baron Maurice de Hirsch for the sum of 5,500 guineas. In doing so, he outbid both the Duke of Portland and John Porter and broke the record for a yearling at an auction that had existed since 1876.

Her father St. Simon was unbeaten and was establishing himself as a trademark stallion. In 1890 he became champion of the sire horses for the first time after fathering his first two winners in classic races. Her mother Quiver brought Memoir, a full sister to La Fleche. Memoir won the Epsom Oaks and the St. Leger and produced the two important broodmares Maid Marian and Satchel.

Racing career

La Fleche was trained by John Porter at Kingsclere for their first two seasons. At the end of her three year season, she was taken to Richard Marsh in Newmarket at Egerton House .
