La Hutte-aux-Gabelous

La Hutte-aux-Gabelous ( German  "Hut der Zöllner" - also called Allée couverte de la Louvetière) is located southeast of St-Mars-la-Futaie , near Fougères in the Mayenne department in France .

The small Mayenne-style Allée couverte (with side access), excavated and restored in 1992, is around 18.0 m long and 5.0 m wide, with the northwestern part (around ⅔) restored to its original state and the southeastern part in which the access was left as it was.

The north-west-south-east oriented chamber is about 1.8 m wide and high. The exact length is unknown due to the destruction at the eastern end. 18 bearing stones, including one end stone, have been preserved. There are five large capstones in situ with a large slab at the restored end of the chamber. The new entrance is at the eastern end of the south side.

The monument is quite unique because of the rectangular shape of the edging made of upright panels. The space between the enclosure and the chamber was filled with rolling stones in the restored part and held at the open ends with dry masonry . Flints and pottery from several periods have been found in the chamber.
