La Nuit de Valognes

La Nuit de Valognes , German The Night in Valognes , is a play by the French author Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt . It is his first piece, written in 1988. It premiered in 1991.

In the castle of Valognes in Normandy , five former lovers of the womanizer Don Juan want to prepare a trial against him in order to force him to marry a young woman whom he has recently seduced. To the amazement of the ladies, don Juan accepts. You refuse this surprising answer and begin to explore his motives.

The piece is a reflection on the personality of Don Juan, who, according to Schmitt, lives only through sexuality without having understood it, and who longs for someone to stop this endless search of desire with different partners. It is a reinterpretation of the well-known myth of Don Juan.
