Laban, the little ghost (book series)
Laban, the little ghost ( Lilla spöket Laban ) is a series of books written by Inger Sandberg . Her husband Lasse Sandberg illustrated the books.

The little ghost Laban lives with his parents in Gomorronsol Castle. Although Laban is a ghost, he is often afraid of what his father does not understand. He explains to him that he cannot be afraid of ghosts if he is one himself. In addition, Father Ghost wants to teach him how to scare people, because Father Ghost is really good at that. Laban is often unable to meet his father's expectations here. He takes pleasure in other things. Instead of frightening the royal family living in the castle, he befriends little Prince Bo. They camp outside together or roam around the castle. Laban also likes to spend time with his little sister Labolina. He takes care of them, and their presence helps him feel less anxious.

The author Inger Sandberg wrote the story of the ghost Laban for her son Niklas. He was afraid of ghosts. The story should take away his fear of these. That's why she wanted to write about a friendly ghost with whom he and other children could identify. In addition, Laban is portrayed as a ghost who is not always courageous himself, but is also afraid and who does not meet his father's expectations. With the book she wanted to encourage parents to read something from the perspective of scared little children. It should show them that children have the right to be sad, to think differently and to be individual. In addition, parents should be made aware that young children do not have to be courageous.
The first book about Laban's little ghost was published in 1965. In 1966 Lasse Sandberg was awarded the Elsa Beskow plaque for this.
The books in the book series have been translated into many different languages, including English, Russian, Japanese, Dutch, Norwegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk, Danish Finnish, and Ukrainian. While 14 different books were published in Sweden and almost all of them were translated into English, only one was published in German. The German book is entitled Laban does not want to ghost and was published by Engelbert-Verlag in 1968.
Various merchandise items were brought out for the book series, including Gomorronsol Castle as a toy castle.
In addition, the book series was rewritten as a play in Sweden. There were also various exhibitions on the book series in Sweden.
Film adaptations
The books have been filmed several times. The film Laban och Labolina was released in 1974 . Between 2006 and 2013, several cartoons were produced about the little ghost, from which the television series Laban, the little ghost was compiled in Germany. This was broadcast in 2013 on the KiKA (children's channel).
