Lars Erik Mattias "Lasse" Sandberg (born February 17, 1924 in Stockholm , † November 12, 2008 in Karlstad ) was a Swedish illustrator , draftsman and writer .

Life

Lasse Sandberg grew up in Stockholm. After school, Sandberg took a variety of jobs. Among other things, he worked as an office boy, decoration assistant and cinema director. From 1943 to 1944 he worked as a press photographer at Nordisk rotogravyrs bildbyrå and the Dagens Nyheter magazine . From 1944 to 1945 he did his military service as a photographer in the air force . Later he paved roads or was employed as a forest worker and dock worker. From 1948 to 1949 he studied design at Beckmans designhögskola . Shortly after starting his studies, Lasse Sandberg established himself as a cartoonist and illustrator. His first publications were created as a cartoonist in the magazine Söndagsisse-Strix . Collaborations with the magazines Vi , Folket i bild , Perspektiv , Utsikt , Industria , Se , Dagens Arbete and some of the most important Stockholm newspapers followed. In the 1950s his drawings appeared in various specialist magazines. From 1962 Sandberg worked mainly for the magazine Se and the culture section of the magazine Expressen . Initially, his drawings were inspired by American cartoonists like Saul Steinberg , but he developed his own style in the mid-1950s. His cartoons later appeared in the books Gubbar 1952, Vit man i Afrika 1952, Ritat 1953, TYPER och typer 1954 and Jobbet och jag 1959.

In the spring of 1950, Sandberg married the elementary school teacher Inger Eriksson , who not only became his wife, but also his co-author. After the birth of their daughter Lena in 1952, Sandberg decided to concentrate fully on his job as a father and mostly only drew in the evening or at night.

In 1953 the couple published their first book together, Fåret Ullrik får medalj . Two years later the couple had their second child, Niklas. Both children became main characters in books, like Lena and her dog Jassi ( Lena berättar , 1963) and An animal all to myself ( Niklas önskedjur , 1972).

The couple's breakthrough came with the book Vad Anna fick se , the first book about Susi (Lilla Anna). This was followed by other successful book series, such as the one about the Laban ghost or about thumbs. In the 1980s, Sandberg became a grandfather. Several books were dedicated to his first grandson. In 1995 Lasse Sandberg began to write two books of his own. These were named När jag var mindre - en bok för större barn and Från Greta Garbos knä till Bryssel . From 1995 to 1997 he held a chair at the Swedish Children's Book Academy. Between 2003 and 2005 Lasse Sandberg published four books together with Inger Sandberg, but they were not translated into German. Lasse and Inger Sandberg have written more than a hundred children's books together; her books have been translated into 33 languages (as of 2020) and are very popular in Japan, among others.

As a freelance illustrator, Sanderberg illustrated Harry Martinson's En bil kommer lastad , published in 1950, Gustaf Lindwall's Kalle krake och andra kråkfåglar (1951), the anthology Bilparaden published by Hemming Sten and Anders Ehnmark , and books by Erik Roos , Gertrud Zetterholm , Kerstin Malm and Olle Lisberg .

Lasse Sandberg used ink, colored pencils, pastels, acrylic and collages for his illustrations. He is considered to be the one who introduced the collage technique in picture books. In 1954 he received the newly founded Oscar prize for comics. He also received several scholarships.

Together with Harry Sandberg and Sven Frödin he exhibited his works in 1952 in the Värmlands Museum in Karlstad. In 1952 and 1954 he worked with the Unga tecknare (the young artists) of the National Museum. In 1956 his works were exhibited at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan Stockholm under the title Svart och vitt (Black and White). His works have also been exhibited in the Kunstnerernes Hus i Oslo (1957), in the Svensk-franska konstgalleriet in Stockholm (1959), in the Galleri Brinken (1957), and in collection exhibitions in Warsaw (1964) and Montreal (1965).

Sandberg's works can be seen in the Värmlands Museum , the National Museum in Stockholm , the Postal Museum , the Moderna Museet , the Enköping City Library, the Värmland City Council, Karlstad Municipality and the University of Virginia .
