Anders Ehnmark (born June 2, 1931 in Linköping ; † March 29, 2019 ) was a Swedish journalist and writer .

life and work

Anders Ehnmark grew up in an academic family. While still studying humanities, which he graduated from Uppsala University in 1960 , he began writing for the daily Expressen . Among other things, he worked in the journal's culture department and as a correspondent in Rome and Kiruna . At the beginning of the seventies he switched to the communist newspaper Norrskensflamman in Luleå for a year . Later he was employed by the politically left-wing magazine Folket i Bild / Kulturfront , but mostly worked as a freelance journalist. Since 1995 he has been a regular employee of the Expressen again .

In parallel to his publications in the press, he published reports in book form on, among other things, Cuba , Angola and Guinea-Bissau , which received a lot of attention in Sweden. His books on Niccolò Machiavelli (1986), Erik Gustaf Geijer (1999) and Antonio Gramsci (2005) have earned him the reputation of being one of the best essayists in his country. As a left-wing thinker, he played an important role in the political opinion-forming process in Sweden for five decades.

Ehnmark also became known through his cooperation with the writer Per Olov Enquist . The two friends wrote several plays together, such as Chez nous (1976). In their joint novel, Doktor Mabuses nya testamente (1982; German title: Mann im Pool / Doktor Mabuse's new testament), Ehnmark and Enquist paint a critical and satirical picture of the Swedish welfare state .

Anders Ehnmark was married to the journalist Anna Hagström since 1976. He has received several awards for his work, including a. with the Övralidpriset (2002) and the Essay Prize of the Swedish Academy (2010). In 1992 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Gothenburg .
