Labarna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Labarna († around 1565 BC ( short chronology ) or 1625 (medium chronology)) was a Hittite great king .

His identity is still unclear because it is not certain whether Labarna was his name or his title. For a while he was equated with Ḫattušili I. In the description of Labarna's early years, however, there is the phrase: "The land was little."

Since this sentence was missing in the text about Hattušili, it is assumed that Labarna, as its predecessor, conquered so much land that this description would no longer have fit that.

Labarna's capital was Kuššara (south of the Halys ?). From here he conquered Ḫupišna , Tuwanuwa , Nenašša , Landa , Zallara , Purušḫanda and Lušna and, according to Hittite statements, installed one of his sons as ruler in each of these countries.

When Labarna around 1565 BC Died, so Ḫattušili I, the nephew of Tawananna (Great Queen), became Great King, which could indicate irregularities in the succession to the throne, since none of Labarna's seven sons became ruler.
