Location of Tuwanuwa between the Lower Land and Kizzuwatna

Tuwanuwa was in the late Bronze Age 2nd millennium BC. A city in the lower land of the Hittite Empire near Kizzuwatna . It was located on the site of ancient Tyana and today's Kemerhisar in the Turkish province of Niğde .

Tuwanuwa is mentioned for the first time in the succession decree of the great king Telipinu (16th century BC) among the lands ruled by the sons of Labarna (17th century BC). The importance of the city is based on its location on an important transport route that led from the Mediterranean via Tarša to the north into the Hittite heartland. According to a text from the time of Ḫattušili III, the influence of the Luwian empire of Arzawa extended . (13th century BC) in the reign of Tudḫaliya II. (Approx. 1375-1355 BC) to Tuwanuwa and Uda, although the location of the latter is still unclear. His son and successor Šuppiluliuma I was able to recapture the area for his father in battles in the region of Tuwanuwa, which ultimately led to the expulsion of Arzawa from Kizzuwatna. Šuppiluliuma's successor Muršili II invokes various gods of Tuwanuwa in his plague prayers. The successor of the city in the time of the late Luwian small states was the Iron Age Tuwana .
