Life
Tudḫaliya succeeded his father, the great king Arnuwanda I , to the throne.
During his reign, the Kaškäer invaded Hittite territory repeatedly. These attracted u. a. as far as Nenašša , south of the Maraššanta (Halys) and plundered the capital Ḫattuša , whereupon the farm moved to Šamuḫa further east . A destruction of the capital has neither been archaeologically proven nor mentioned in contemporary reports. Tudḫaliya, already emaciated from illness, undertook several campaigns northwards, supported by his son Šuppiluliuma , who allegedly served him for 20 years as a military leader, but they did not achieve long-term success.
Azzi-Ḫayaša , located in Eastern or Nodostanatolia, also attacked the Hittite heartland. In the course of the second campaign that Tudḫaliya then undertook, the submission of Azzi-ayaša finally succeeded. Arzawa , the kingdom under Tarḫuntaradu in the west, also attacked the Hittite empire and advanced as far as Tuwanuwa . At the same time, Amenhotep III offered . give the king of Arzawa his daughter's hand to bind him closer to him.
During the reign of Tudḫaliya, Kizzuwatna became an integral part of the Hittite Empire and was no longer a vassal as before.
Before his death, the great king let the nobility recognize his son Tudḫaliya as his successor by oath . His brother Šuppiluliuma also took this oath.
Tudḫaliya or his son of the same name is depicted on a silver fist vessel offering a libation to the weather god .
