Labbacallee

Labbacallee ( Irish Leaba Caillighe - German  "bed of the witch" ) is the largest Irish wedge tomb with a length of over 14.0 m . It is located in County Cork , in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland , about two kilometers southeast of Glanworth and eight kilometers northwest of Femoy . Wedge Tombs ( German  "Keilgräber" ), formerly also called "wedge-shaped gallery grave", are aisle-free, mostly undivided megalithic buildings from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age .

description

In front of the gallery are the remains of a large rectangular courtyard, wider than the gallery and accompanied by a fragmentary row of large menhirs . The gallery, located in a wedge-shaped stone mound , the curbs of which are still largely in place, consists of a large rectangular double-walled main chamber 6.2 m long made of solid stone blocks and a narrower 0.9 m long end chamber in the east, separated by a plate. Which, unlike usual, ends with five axially placed end stones with intermediate masonry. Three huge stones form the ceiling. The largest is 3.8 m long and weighs ten tons.

The excavation in 1934 revealed a number of fragments of a late Stone Age decorated vessel and fragments of bone and flint . The radiocarbon C14 investigations date the bone deposits between 2202 and 2138 BC. Chr.

The complex resembles French gallery tombs in size and design, as well as one of the Wedge Tombs in the Burren , County Cavan .
