Onofre Jarpa
Onofre Jarpa Labra (born June 12, 1849 in Villa de Alhué , † February 15, 1940 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter.
Life
Jarpa began his training at Salustio Carmona when he was fifteen . From 1866 he studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes in Santiago with Alejandro Ciccarelli and Ernst Kirchbach . He was also a student of Antonio Smith . In 1881 he traveled to Europe as a scholarship holder of the Chilean government. There he took lessons with Francisco Pradilla in Spain and with Marco Calderini in Italy , visited the Montserrat monastery and toured Palestine and Lebanon.
After his return to Chile he was best known as a landscape and portrait painter. His works have been shown at numerous exhibitions in Chile, Argentina, France and Spain. In 1910 he was awarded a gold medal at the Exposición Internacional de Santiago . A retrospective of his work organized by the Instituto Cultural de Las Condes in Santiago in 1975. A large number of his paintings is owned by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes .
His many students, whom he gave private lessons, included José Tomás Errázuriz , Alberto Valenzuela Llanos , Eugenio Guzmán Ovalle , Manuel Aspillaga , Gustavo Carrasco , Jorge Délano , Guillermo Olea , Manuel Cerda and Elena Calvo .
