The archaeological site of the classical Maya culture, Lagartero, is 53 km as the crow flies southeast of the small town of Comitán, on an island in the marshland known as Lagos de Cortés, near the state border with Guatemala , in the Mexican state of Chiapas . It was first described by Thomas Lee in 1974, and the first investigations were carried out soon after by Susan Ekholm. Between 1993 and 2003, excavations and restorations took place, mainly in the ceremonial center, which mainly consists of a rectangular plaza with pyramids of different heights and shapes on the four sides. A ball playground , a 6.5 m high pyramid with seven step-shaped structures flanking a courtyard, a 1 m higher pyramid made of five structures and other, lower structures have been uncovered and restored . They are all dated to the late classical period (700-900) . The site is open to the public.
