The Lagos Light Rail is under construction Template: future / in 2 yearsto befindliches rail Light system in the Nigerian Lagos . It is planned by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and, when completed, is to consist of a total of seven lines. The entire infrastructure and rolling stock are to be provided by licensed companies. LAMATA will become the system's supervisory authority. The operator should also ensure the traction power supply .

history

The history of Lagos Light Rail dates back to the 1980s when Alahji Lateff Jakande proposed the Lagos Metroline network during the Second Nigerian Republic. This original Metroline project was discontinued by Muhammadu Buhari in 1985 . There was a loss of over $ 78 million. The idea of a light rail network was revived in the early 2000s by the governor of Lagos State Bola Tinubu. The official start of the project was in December 2003. This proposal, originally costing 135 million euros, was part of a larger urban transport program that was to be managed by the newly established Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). This agency initially focused on developing a bus rapid transit system that would extend from Mile 2 to Lagos Island . In 2008, LAMATA started developing the rail project. The focus was initially on the two lines red and blue. The commissioning of the rail system was announced in August 2018 for the year 2022.

Okokomaiko-Marina (Blue Line)

"National Theater" stop under construction

The state government of Lagos approved in April 2008, 70 billion naira for the construction of the line Okokomaiko-Iddo-Marina Line. According to an initial plan, this line should be completed in 2011. When CPCS Transcom Limited, a Canadian infrastructure consultancy, was brought in from Ottawa in January 2010, the completion date was postponed to 2015. The construction company China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation was commissioned to build the blue line. This line should be 27.5 km long and run from Marina to Okokomaiko. A total of 13 stops will be set up. The total travel time should be 35 minutes. The line is being built as an electrically operated mass transport system. Most of the route will run above ground from east to west. The median of the expanded Badagry Expressway between Igbo-Elerin Road in Okokomaiko and Iganmu is used. From there it is run as an elevated railway on the south side of the expressway over the intersection of Eric Moore Road. The line then continues south of the National Theater to Iddo. From there it continues to Lagos Island where the line ends in Marina. The line is currently located between the National Theater and Mile 2. The line's depot will be set up in Okokomaiko. This is connected to an operating line with the blue line. The entire line will have a completely separate track structure and only have height-free crossings . The entire line is financed from the state budget of the State of Lagos. The operation of the line is currently in the tender.

The opening of the first section is currently (September 2014) delayed.

Agbado-Marina line red

The second, red line should run from Marina to Agado . This line will share the 30 meter wide corridor of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). The route of the Lightrail will take up the eastern half of the corridor. A double-track track structure in standard gauge is to be created there, which is to be operated completely independently of the NRS line. In order to be able to use the full corridor of 30 m, however, a large number of people must first be relocated, who do business in the area of the corridor and in some cases also live. In the corridor, the drainage and the railway structure also have to be renewed. A large number of the stops have to be rebuilt, as the current stations are unsuitable for the Light Rail.
