The Laguna de Fúquene is a freshwater lake in the northeastern Andes in Colombia . The lake is around 80 km from the Colombian capital Bogotá in the area of the municipalities of Fúquene and Susa in the north of Cundinamarca at an altitude of 2543 m on the border with the Boyacá department .
In order to gain more arable and grazing land, the lake is being drained more and more. From the former 100 km² area, only 30 km² are currently left. Since the lake is only 5.5 m deep, its self-cleaning power is limited. Due to the population growth and the livestock industry, there was an increased entry of faeces into the lake, which led to a lack of oxygen and increasing eutrophication of the lake.
