The Lake Alabaster ( Māori : Wāwāhi Waka ) is a lake in the north of Fiordland in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand . The lake runs over 15 km from northeast to southwest and has an area of 7 km². It is located in a valley cut between the Skippers Range in the west and the Bryneira Range in the east.
Lake Alabaster is fed and drained by the Pyke River . Shortly after leaving the lake, the Pyke River flows into the Hollyford River . The Hollyford Track , one of New Zealand's most famous hiking trails, crosses its drain with a suspension bridge. A hiking trail, the Pyke Big Bay Route, runs along the east coast of the lake .
The lake is part of the Fiordland National Park . The Department of Conservation operates a hiking hut at the southern end of the lake, which was renovated in 2005. The “Pyke Lodge” for guided hikes is also nearby
The lake was named after a captain Alabaster, who in 1863 was the first European to sail up Lake McKerrow over the sandbar of Martins Bay .
