The Lake McKerrow ( Māori : Whakatipu Waitai ) is a lake in the north of Fiordland in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand . The lake runs over 15 km from southeast to northwest and has an area of 28 km².
Lake McKerrow is fed and drained by the Hollyford River . It is the only lake in this river. About 6 km upstream, the Pyke River joins the Hollyford River shortly after leaving Lake Alabaster . The Hollyford Track , one of New Zealand's most famous hiking trails, follows its east coast.
The lake is a fjord that has been cut off from the Tasman Sea by sediments . The sea is now three kilometers from the northern end of the lake.
The Alpine Fault runs through the lake. Researchers from GNS Science and the University of Nevada, Reno examined sediments from the last 24 earthquakes in the fault near the lake and found activity to be very common.
