The Hollyford River ( Māori Whakatipu Kā Tipu ) is a river in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand . It runs for 128 km through the Fiordland and the Fiordland National Park . Its source is 10 km north of the northern tip of Lake Te Anau near the Homer Tunnel . It flows north through the Hollyford Valley, formed by a glacier . It passes Lake McKerrow and flows into Martins Bay , 25 km north of Milford Sound in the Tasman Sea . The touristy Hollyford Track follows the right side of the river. Parts of the river course inland form the traditional border between the Southland and Otago regions .
The only major tributary is the Pyke River , which flows into the river shortly after flowing through Lake Alabaster above Lake McKerrow.
Three sections of the river are regularly kayaked:
- Monkey Creek - Falls Creek (difficulty level V +)
- Falls Creek - Marian Swingbridge (III-IV)
- Marian Creek Run (IV – V)
