The Lake Hope is a small lake in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The lake is located in the up to 2307  m high mountains, around 2.5 km southeast of the mountain range The Remarkables , which is adjacent to Lake Wakatipu to the east . The almost circular lake is located in a caldera at an altitude of 1790  m and is surrounded by seven 2071  m to 2258  m high peaks. The lake gets its inflow from a smaller lake around 60 m higher on its west side. The outflow of Lake Hope takes place on its southwest side via the Wye Creek South Branch , where the caldera opens accordingly. The lake measures around 1.6 km in circumference, around 510 m in an east-west direction and around 480 m in a north-south direction. Almost 2 km south-east is Lake Te Kōhua , which is about the same size .

In summer Lake Hope shines against the sunlight in a deep blue tone and in winter it is frozen over and covered with snow.

geology

The Lake Hope belongs to a group of small lakes east and southeast which during the Ice Age The Remarkables have formed in the high altitudes of the mountains.
