Lake Poteriteri is the southernmost of the major lakes in New Zealand's main islands. It is located 40 km west of Tuatapere in the Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand . Only the small lakes Lake Hakapoua and Lake Innes are further south.
Located in a steep mountain valley, the lake is about 28 km long and runs in a north-south direction, it is on average less than 2 km wide and covers an area of 43 km².
The outflow of the lake is the Waitutu River , which flows into the western end of the Foveaux Strait after only eight kilometers .
The lake is accessible via the marked Harry's Track from the exit of Lake Hauroko or a deer passage from Slaughter Burn .
