The Lake Hauroko is a 63 km² large lake in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand in the region Southland and a station on the Southern Scenic Route . It is located at about 150 m in a valley of the Fiordland National Park and is about 40 km long. With a maximum depth of 463 meters, it is the deepest lake in New Zealand and Oceania .
The lake is about 35 kilometers northwest of Tuatapere . It flows over the 20 km long Wairaurahiri River 10 kilometers west of Te Waewae Bay into the Foveaux Strait .
There is an island in the lake, Mary Island , which is about a square kilometer and is featured in many local legends. One of these legends says that the island is under a Māori curse. Such stories are rejected by the local Maori.
From the outflow of the lake, Lake Poteriteri can be reached via the signposted Harry's Track .
