Tuatapere is a village in the Southland District on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Tuatapere is located around 60 km northwest of Invercargill on the Waiau River , which flows 8 km further south in Te Waewae Bay into Foveaux Strait . The place is connected to Invercargill in the east and Te Anau in the north via State Highway 99 . The road, part of the Southern Scenic Route , runs right through the village. A railway connection also existed until 1976.

Railway history

Old
Tuatapere station building

On October 1, 1909, the Tuatapere Branch , a branch line from Invercargill to Tuatapere , was opened. An extension to Orawia was put into operation on October 20, 1925 and a locomotive depot was set up in the city. This was used as the basis for the operation of the line, so that there were de facto two sections: one from Invercargill to Tuatapere and one from Tuatapere to Orawia . Until 1968 all trains were pulled by steam locomotives. In June 1968 the company switched to diesel operation and the locomotive depot was then closed. On October 1, 1970, the line was shortened to Tuatapere due to insufficient freight and on July 30, 1976 the section between Riverton and Tuatapere was closed. Some remnants of the railway in Tuatapere have been preserved, including structures on the area of the station, such as the station building and a storage shed.

population

At the census of 2013 the place had 558 inhabitants, 3.6% less than at the census in 2006, for comparison: 2001: 681 inhabitants. 1996: 741 Ew. and thus recorded a significant population decline over the past 20 years.

economy

The most important branches of the economy are still forestry, agriculture and fishing. In 1991 almost 3/4 of the working population were workers, of which almost 1/3 worked in the above-mentioned branches of industry. In 2001, 24% of the workforce were still employed in agriculture and fishing, making them the largest group of employees.

Tuatapere likes to call itself " New Zealand's Sausage Capital " (sausage capital ), as the butcher's trade is supposedly still practiced in the traditional way and the well-known hotdog sausages are still made by hand.

tourism

From a tourist point of view, the place is a stopover on the Southern Scenic Route from Invercargill to Te Anau . The largest viaduct in the southern hemisphere is located nearby . The Blue Cliffs and the Hump Ridge Track are other attractions. In the village itself, the Bushmen's Museum (lumberjack museum ) can be visited.
