The Waiau River in Southland on New Zealand's South Island is the largest of three rivers of the same name in New Zealand. Its length is 217 km. and begins as an outflow of Lake Te Anau , from which it flows 10 km south into Lake Manapouri , then 70 km south before it flows into Foveaux Strait 8 km south of Tuatapere . It also takes in water from Lake Monowai .
The river served as the backdrop for the Anduin River at the end of the film The Lord of the Rings: The Companions in the scenes in which the Uruk-hai chase the Companions along a river bank.
