The Lake Manapouri is the second smallest of the five major glacial lakes in the south of the South Island of New Zealand . It is located in the remote western part of the Southland region in Fiordland National Park .
With an area of 142 km², Lake Manapouri forms the second smallest of the five large glacial lakes in the country in front of Lake Hāwea . The lake reaches its longest extension of 28 kilometers in an east-west direction; the entire length of the shore is 170 kilometers. Lake Manapouri consists of a base and four side arms: a northern, a southern, a western and the Hope arm. The water surface itself is littered with a total of 33 larger and smaller islands, 22 of which are forested. The largest of the islands is Pomona Island . The from Lake Te Anau originating Waiau River also forms the inflow and the outflow of the lake.
Lake Manapouri is entirely within the boundaries of Fiordland National Park , the largest national park in the country, which, along with other protected areas in the region, forms the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site.
The controversial Manapouri power plant , the largest underground power plant in the country, is located on the western shore of the lake .
