Pomona Island is an island in Lake Manapouri on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The island was named in 1862 by James McKerrow after the main island of the Orkney Islands in Scotland , for which the name Pomona was common at the time.

geography

Pomona Island is located around 12 km northwest of Manapouri in the middle of the widely ramified Lake Manapouri . The uninhabited and 262 hectare large island has the shape of an inverted triangle, has a length of 2.3 km and is around 2.0 km at its widest point. It rises 340  m out of the lake with its height of 511  m above sea level .

Pomona Iceland is located in Fiordland National Park and is part of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area under the four national parks in the southwest of the South Island are summarized and the status of a UNESCO - World Heritage have.

Administratively, the island is part of the Southland District of the Southland region .

geology

In 2011, molybdenite was found in the otherwise predominant granite on the coastline of the island . Since there were no quartz veins in the rock , it was concluded that there was magmatic-hydrothermal activity in connection with the crystallization of plutons about 157 million years ago in a joker zone-like mesothermal mineralization, which confirms more recent theories about the geological history of South New Zealand.

history

In 1966 the government planned to raise the water level of Lake Manapouri for a hydroelectric power plant . After studies came to the conclusion that the entire shore vegetation of the lake would be destroyed, which would also have affected Pomona Island , the project was discontinued and the plan was to raise the water level of the lake in its natural fluctuation range as required and lower it. But also animal species introduced by the Europeans, such as rats , mice , possums , ermines and deer threatened the island's biodiversity , especially the bird world.

In 2005, a group of residents of Manapouri and Te Anau formed and founded the Pomona Island Charitable Trust with the aim of removing the alien animals from Pomona Island and Rona Island , which is around 4 km further east, and the locals To guarantee birds a protected habitat again. The Trust's activities were coordinated and accompanied by the Department of Conservation .

After stoats, deer and 430 possums were removed from the island, two releases of the pesticides rodenticide and brodifacoum took place within 40 days in July / August 2007 to exterminate all rodents.

In 2008 the South Island Robin , which is called long-legged flycatcher in German , and in 2011 the yellowhead , known among the Māori as Mōhua and known in German as the yellow-headed flycatcher , was released on the island. In November 2011, the Tokoeka - Kiwi , which is called Streifenkiwi in German , was released. As of 2011, there were only an estimated 370 individuals of its species, so that its species must be regarded as critically endangered.
