The Lake Sumner ( māori Hokakura ) is a lake about 100 km north-west of Christchurch . It is located in the Lake Sumner Forest Park in the Hurunui District of the Canterbury region on New Zealand's South Island . The lake, located in an uninhabited area, is traversed by the Hurunui River .
There are other smaller lakes nearby ( Loch Katrine , Lake Sheppard , Lake Taylor , Lake Mason and Lake Marion ).
The area around the lake is used for hunting, hiking, trout fishing, white water kayaking, and mountain biking. Several Department of Conservation cabins in the area are available for overnight stays. Because of its remote location and poor road access, the area is less visited.
