The Hurunui River is the smallest of four main rivers in the Hurunui District in the northern region of Canterbury in New Zealand .

geography

The river has a divided upper course. The northern branch rises in the New Zealand Alps at Harper Pass and measures a length of around 48 km to the confluence with the southern branch, which rises south of Harper Pass on the southern side of the Crawford Range and measures around 42 km. From the confluence of the two branches of the river to the confluence with the Pacific Ocean , the Hurunui River overcomes another 97 km. This means that the river, together with its longest branch, which flows through Lake Sumner , is around 150 km in length. The water catchment area of the river is given between 1070 km 2 and 2671 km 2 , depending on the source . The Hurunui River flows into the Pacific Ocean 11 km south of Cheviot .

Tributaries of the Hurunui River are the Jollie Brook , the Glenrae River, and the Mandamus River . In addition to Lake Sumner , which is the largest lake in the river's catchment area, the tributaries Lake Taylor , Lake Sheppard , Loch Kathrine and Lake Mason , which were dammed by glacial moraines from the Pleistocene , are.

In the upper reaches, the river has worked its way into the graywacke bottom, while in the middle reaches sediments that form the Culverden Plains . Downstream there are two gorges that cut through Grauwacke, softer claystone and sandstone from the Tertiary .

leisure

The river has rapids of difficulty II and III for white water kayaking. The best white water is located downstream of the confluence of the north and south arms in Maori Gully and Harwarden Gorge .

The king salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) was introduced as a fishing fish in the 1900s.

Water Conservation Order

On August 30, 2007, the New Zealand Fish and Game Council and the New Zealand Recreational Canoeing Association (now Whitewater NZ ) submitted an application to the Ministry for the Environment for a Water Conservation Order to protect the river.

On August 14, 2009, the Conservation Order was issued for the northern branch, but not for the southern branch. On September 2nd, Whitewater NZ filed an appeal with the Environment Court in order to include the southern branch.

Hurunui Water Project

From Hurunui Water Project economic use of the river is intended for irrigation and power generation, since October of 2009. After a negative decision from the Environmental Court, the Hurunui Water Project appealed to the Supreme Court. In September 2012 the project comprised four dams in the Waitohi River , the discharge of up to 49.2 m³ / s from the Hurunui River , discharge of further up to 42.4 m³ / s from the Waitohi River, run-of-river power plants and further reservoirs of 6.5 Millions of m³ in other reservoirs.
