Lamba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lamba is a language from Zambia .

It is related to Bemba and is commonly spoken in the copper belt. It is the mother tongue of around 210,000 people in northern Zambia and on the southern edge of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . Lamba is also widespread there thanks to numerous migrants who have moved to Lusaka .

Lamba is one of the Bantu languages (in fact, mu ntu means "one person" in Lamba and ba ntu means "two or more people"). In addition to English, linguists in Zambia count between 42 and 78 local languages. According to some linguists, Lamba is just one dialect of Bemba. Although the two languages have many words in common, they are not as closely related as, for example, Swiss German and Standard German .
