history

It was originally supposed to be on the bastion near the knee gate , but this was discarded. It was inaugurated on July 25, 1904 on the Old Market on the corner of Semlower Strasse .

The Stralsund citizens decided in 1937 to remove the monument from the Alter Markt. This happened on June 22, 1937. The memorial was placed on a new base on May 19, 1938 at its new location on Wulflamufer in the so-called “Mayor's Quarter” on Frankenteich. The reason given was that it was contrary to the architectural tradition of the Old Market and that the market was used for parking lots and rallies.

A transfer of the monument back to the old market was often discussed, but never carried out.
