Lambert Steinwich

Lambert Steinwich (born May 19, 1571 in Düsseldorf , † August 13, 1629 in Stralsund ) was a German lawyer , diplomat and politician . He was Mayor of Stralsund from 1616 to 1629 .

Born in Düsseldorf as the son of the law teacher Ludolph Steinwich, Lambert came to Stralsund in 1601 after studying law and a short stay as a lawyer in Anklam, where he took the oath as a sub syndicus on May 4th . Here he married Anna Klinkow in 1602, she died in 1614. In 1606 he became the 1st Syndic of Stralsund in place of Johann Domann, who had been appointed General Syndic of the Hanseatic League . Steinwich was suspended in 1612 after a dispute with Philipp Julius , the Duke of Pomerania-Wolgast, whom he had accused of breaching the peace before the Imperial Court, and from then on worked as a lawyer.

From 1616 he was again active as Syndicus of the Hanseatic city and became mayor of Stralsund on August 6 of this year . In 1617 he married Regina Völschow, whose father was mayor of Greifswald . In 1619 Steinwich received the offer to take up the post of Hanseatic General Syndic in Lübeck as the successor to Johann Domann. Since Stralsund did not want to let him go, he held both the first syndicate of the city of Stralsund and the general syndicate of the Hanseatic League until the end of his life, but from Stralsund and not in Lübeck. As the successor to Thomas Brandenburg, he represented the city as a district administrator in the state estates committee .

During the siege of Stralsund in the Thirty Years' War in 1628, he conducted negotiations with Albrecht von Wallenstein . At the same time, Steinwich secretly negotiated with Denmark and Sweden, with whose help Stralsund could be defended. In 1628 the rule of the Swedes began with the signing of the Alliance Treaty.

Lambert Steinwich died of the plague in 1629 . His epitaph with an extensive Latin biography can be found in Stralsund's Nikolaikirche.

Today the Lambert Steinwich memorial on the Wulflamufer created by the sculptor Wilhelm Jacobi commemorates him. A school and Lambert-Steinwich-Strasse also remind of him .
