List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Stralsund
In the Middle Ages, mayors in Stralsund were mostly provided by the most important guilds. Numerous portraits of the city's mayors can be found in Stralsund Town Hall . The office of mayor was usually given for life.
The office of Lord Mayor has existed in Stralsund since 1887. The title was awarded for loyal service. It was awarded initially by the Kaiser and later by the government of the Weimar Republic . From 1943 to April 1945 there was no mayor, instead there was a Reich Commissioner.
Since 2004 the mayor has been determined by direct election.
