Otto Francke

Otto Francke (born January 10, 1823 in Magdeburg , † December 15, 1886 in Stralsund ) was a German administrative lawyer, local researcher and mayor of Stralsund. He wrote several essays on the history of Stralsund.

Life

Otto Francke was the son of Mayor August Wilhelm Francke . After attending the Magdeburg high school, Otto Francke studied law and cameral sciences in Heidelberg , Bonn and Berlin from 1841 to 1844 and also devoted himself to history and the German language. In 1842 he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg . After taking his first two legal exams, he left the judicial service in 1847 and devoted himself to administration. After successful exams in this field, he began working at the Aschersleben district office in 1851 and then at the police headquartersin Magdeburg. From here he moved to the government department of the police in Berlin in 1851.

In July 1854 he was appointed to the city council of Stralsund. In the Hanseatic city he took over the management of the police headquarters. He dedicated himself to the promotion of the school and church system as well as the development of the municipal library and the provincial museum for New Western Pomerania and Rügen , which was founded in 1859 by Rudolf Baier . Francke also campaigned for the restoration of the Stralsund town hall in the Gothic shell.

Francke became mayor after the death of Karl Gustav Fabricius in 1864. From 1879 he was also the city's representative in the Prussian mansion , after he became his successor after the death of the First Mayor Wilhelm Friedrich Denhard († July 18, 1879).

In his free time he devoted himself to studying the historical documents of the council archives and published numerous essays on the Stralsund constitution, cultural history, the Stralsund street names , church architecture and the person of Bertram Wulflam .

In recognition of his services, Francke was appointed Privy Councilor by the King , he was a bearer of the Order of the Red Eagle. The philosophy faculty of the University of Greifswald earned him an honorary doctorate , he was an honorary member of several history associations.

Works

On the occasion of the discovery of the Hiddenseer gold jewelry in 1874 he published his essay “Where did Olaf Tryggvason fight his last battle?”.

He also published many works in the “Baltic Studies XXI-XXV”, the “Pomeranian Yearbooks I-II” and the “Hansische Geschichtsbl Blätter 1877-1880”.

family

Francke married Anna Auguste Wilhelmine von Berg on May 4, 1862. They had three children together. They lived in the house at Heilgeiststrasse 62 in Stralsund .
