Johann Ehrenfried Charisius

Johann Ehrenfried Gottfried Charisius (born October 31, 1684 in Stralsund ; † September 10, 1760 there ) was a German politician and mayor of Stralsund.

Life

He came from an old family in Stralsund and was the son of Christian Ehrenfried Charisius .

After attending the Stralsund grammar school located in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen , he studied in Halle (Saale) and Jena . He then went on study trips through Holland and France , where he also visited Paris . In 1707 he returned to Stralsund.

In 1710 Charisius became secretary at the Stralsund clerical consistory and in 1711 a member of the college of senior men of clothing tailors. He was a member of the city council from 1716, was elected syndic in 1726 and mayor in 1733, which he remained until his death. In 1739 he was appointed royal Swedish district administrator .

Johann Ehrenfried Charisius was particularly committed to better urban administration and was very concerned about the history of his homeland. One of his achievements is the expansion of the holdings of the council library. Charisius wrote a few writings on local history, but also poetry. In his possession there were numerous documents and genealogies as well as a large number of portraits of the Stralsund mayors.

His father Christian Ehrenfried Charisius was also mayor of Stralsund from 1681 to 1697. His nephew Christian Ehrenfried Charisius held this office from 1764 to 1773.
