This is a directory of street names in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund .

The directory gives the name of the street and (in brackets) the district. An explanation (year of naming, reason) for the street name is given. Because of the large number of streets, the directory was divided according to the first letters of the street names. Under "General" you will find the introduction and explanations of the street names in general.

  • Gänseweide (South / Andershof)
  • Garbodenhagen (Grünhufe / Stadtkoppel)
  • Gartenstrasse (Franconia / Frankenvorstadt)
  • Garzer Weg (Franconia / Frankensiedlung)
Named after the city of Garz on Rügen . In this settlement, streets were mainly named after places on the island of Rügen.
  • Gasometer path
This road was laid out in 2005 and named after the gasometers that were located here until it was demolished in 2003 .
  • Gentzkowstrasse (Franconia / Frankenvorstadt)
The Gentzkowstraße emerged in the 1920s under the name of the web path . In 1927 several Stralsund streets were named after former mayors by resolution of the city council; The Bahnweg was named after the chronicler Dr. jur. Nikolaus Gentzkow (* 1502, † 1576), who was mayor of Stralsund from 1555 until his death .
The Stralsund sugar factory , which was closed on December 31, 1992, was located on Gentzkowstrasse .
  • Gerhart-Hauptmann-Strasse (Knieper / Kniepervorstadt)
Named after the German writer Gerhart Hauptmann . In the last years of his life, he settled on the island of Hiddensee . However, there is no direct connection to Stralsund.
At first it was called Am Strande , which can be traced back to the nearby Strelasund , and from 1869 it was called Strandstrasse . After Stralsund was de-fortified in 1873, a lot was built here, mainly by wealthy citizens. The castle on the Sund is located in the street .
In 1976 the street was renamed again to mark the 30th anniversary of Gerhart Hauptmann's death.

Named after the gorse . Many streets in this neighborhood are named after native plants and shrubs.
  • Gottlieb-Mohnike-Weg (Knieper / Knieper West)
Two men named Gottlieb Mohnike were significant in Stralsund's history : The German doctor Otto Gottlieb Mohnike (1814–1887) (the Stralsund native made a name for himself primarily in the field of widespread smallpox vaccination in Japan) and his father Dr. Gottlieb Christian Mohnike (1781–1841), who worked as pastor of the St. Jakobi Church and as consistorial and school councilor as well as head of the government school authority and also as a northist and after whom the street was named.

  • Graf-v.-Stauffenberg-Strasse (Grünhufe / Grünthal-Viermorgen)
Named after the German resistance fighters against National Socialism Berthold and Colonel Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg . They were the main characters in the uprising on July 20, 1944 . There is no direct connection to Stralsund.
  • Grahlhofer Weg (South / Andershof)
Named after Gut Grahlhof on the island of Rügen . This passed into the possession of the Stralsund monastery of St. Jürgen am Strande in the 16th century .
  • Grasnelkenweg (South / Andershof)
Named after the native carnation . In this part of the city, the streets are mostly named after native plants.
  • Greifswalder Chaussee (Franconia / Franconia center or Franconia settlement or south / Andershof)
This road leads as the former federal highway 96 in the direction of Greifswald . Its once very great importance for the city declined with the construction of a bypass road in early 2004.
The street was laid out under the name An der Chaussee and was only called Greifswalder Chaussee when the street names were reformed in 1869 . On April 17, 1975, the city council decided to rename it to Straße der Befreiung on April 30, 1975, following the liberation of the city in 1945 by the Red Army advancing from Greifswald . On November 8, 1990, the citizenship decided to rename it.
  • Griegstrasse (Knieper / Knieper Nord)
Named after the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg . The street is in the so-called musicians' quarter . There is no direct connection to Stralsund.
  • Groß Lüdershäger Weg (Tribseer / Tribseer settlement or Tribseer Wiesen)
Named after the town of Groß Lüdershagen on the outskirts of Stralsund.

  • Große Parower Straße (Knieper / Kniepervorstadt or Knieper Nord)
The Große Parower Straße was built in the middle of the 19th century and was initially called Am Parower Weg . It led from the city to neighboring Parow . In 1869 it was given its current name. The air force settlement , a long row of houses for the air force stationed in Parow , and the hospital on the Sund were built here in the 1930s .
  • Großer Diebsteig (Franconia / Frankenvorstadt)
The small and the large thief path were already mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century, at that time still as devestig (deve means thief, mugger ). The streets were just outside the city walls, on the trade route to Greifswald . This is where muggers were up to mischief. A change of name at the end of the 19th century to the "Hochwohlgeboren Rath" ("Due to the creepy names we can no longer get tenants into our houses; we are therefore forced to lower the rents more and more.") Remained unsuccessful.

  • Gustav-Adolf-Strasse (Knieper / Kniepervorstadt)
This street was probably named after the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf in 1931 . He came to Stralsund with his troops in the fight against Wallenstein .
  • Gustower Weg (South / Andershof)
Named after the place Gustow on Rügen . Gustow is practically opposite the city of Stralsund on the opposite side of the Strelasund and close to the Rügen-side departure of the Rügen dam .
