Nikolaus Gentzkow (born December 6, 1502 , † February 24, 1576 in Stralsund ) was a German lawyer and chronicler. He was mayor of Stralsund for 20 years .

Life

Gentzkow was probably the son of a shoemaker in Wittstock in the Electorate of Brandenburg . He studied law and in 1540 became Syndicus of the city of Stralsund. As a lawyer he also represented the dukes of Mecklenburg, the princess-abbess of the Ribnitz monastery and the city ​​of Rostock . On August 5, 1544, the city of Stralsund awarded him the Prohn church loan, which ensured him a good income.

In autumn 1555 he became mayor of the city of Stralsund, but also retained the office of Syndicus for financial reasons. He received support from Bartholomäus Sastrow . As mayor, he represented Stralsund at the court of the Pomeranian dukes and at Hanseatic days . Gentzkow was involved in the development of a new school and church order as well as the city constitution. He was very committed to the new city school in St. Catherine's Monastery, which was abandoned by the Dominicans after the Reformation, and introduced its first rector on April 20, 1560.

In Lübeck's war with Sweden from 1563 to 1568 ( three-crown war ), he behaved neutrally and even assured Swedish ships that they could move freely to the safe ports of Rügen.

Gentzkow died on February 24, 1576 in Stralsund, weakened by illness.

Nikolaus Gentzkow kept a diary that has been preserved in two parts, which describe the years 1558 to 1567. There may be another, earlier part. In this diary, which is an important chronicle for Stralsund, he describes his legal practice, the city administration, art and science, alchemy, magic, physical and medical care and social life. Bartholomäus Sastrow and Johann Berckmann describe him in their chronicles.
