from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Berckmann , also: Johannes B. , Berchmann , Bergkmann , Bergmann , Berkmann (between 1475 and 1500 probably in Stralsund ; † March 12, 1560 ibid) was a German Catholic theologian who became Protestant in the course of the Reformation, and a chronicler .

Life

According to his own statements, Berckmann worked as a preacher in Stralsund long before the Reformation . Bartholomäus Sastrow writes in his chronicle that Berckmann was a member of the Augustinian order in the Stralsund Johanniskloster ; however, this was a Franciscan monastery . Johann Albert Dinnies, on the other hand, states that Berckmann was an Augustinian in Anklam . It is possible that Berckmann actually lived in the Johanniskloster and was responsible for the nuns of the St. Annen and Brigitten monastery , who moved into the Katharinenkloster in 1525 .

Shortly after the Reformation, he accepted the Protestant faith and married. He went to Neubrandenburg , where he placed himself under the protection of Duchess Anna , the wife of Albrecht VII , and preached evangelical doctrine there.

While fleeing from the persecution of the Bishop of Havelberg-Wittstock , he returned to Stralsund at the end of 1524, where he worked on new school and church regulations. From 1527 to 1555 he was pastor at St. Mary's Church in Stralsund , in 1531 he took part in an operation against Denmark as a ship pastor in connection with the count's feud . From November 10, 1555 to July 19, 1556 he was the pastor of the last nuns of St. Annen and Brigitten.

Berckmann wrote a chronicle from 1548, which describes the years from 1510 to February 15, 1560 as the Stralsund Chronicle . In contrast to other contemporary chronicles, he does not follow the view of the rulers. The chronicle is written in Low German . While Bartholomäus Sastrow was still referring to it, it disappeared for a long time and was only rediscovered by Gottlieb Mohnike in 1819 and published in 1833 as the first part of the Stralsund Chronicles by Mohnike and Ernst Heinrich Zober .

family

Berckmann's wife Ursula died in 1532, his daughter in 1545.
