This is a directory of street names in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund .

The directory gives the name of the street and (in brackets) the district. An explanation (year of naming, reason) for the street name is given. Because of the large number of streets, the directory was divided according to the first letters of the street names. Under "General" you will find the introduction and explanations of the street names in general.

  • Papenstrasse (old town / old town)
Named after the priests who lived here in the Middle Ages , called Papen in Low German . There were once even two Papenstrasse in Stralsund. The first name bearer was today's Böttcherstraße , from 1446 the section between Filterstraße and Jacobiturmstraße is also called Papenstraße . Today's Böttcherstraße Große and the new Straße Kleine Papenstraße were named to distinguish them. After the original Papenstraße was renamed Böttcherstraße in 1530, the "little one" disappeared from the street name.
The section between Ossenreyerstraße and Filterstraße was first part of Pumperstraße , later until 1869 Faulerhof , which initially only referred to a large courtyard property and only later the whole section. One of the trenches that stank of rot ran through here.
Between Jacobiturmstrasse and Jacobichorstrasse the section was called Bei der Jacobikirche until 1869 .
The section between Jacobichorstrasse and Badstüberstrasse was named Lowenhagen after the Lowen family , who played an important role in the 14th century . Around 1400 it was renamed Mattenhagen after the trade of the mat binder. In 1869 this section was also assigned to Papenstrasse.

The Parower Chaussee is a street that once led towards the village of Parow, which today belongs to Stralsund .
  • Peter-Blome-Strasse (Franconia / Frankenvorstadt)
Named after the Swedish admiral and ship's captain Peter Blome (* 1584, † 1649), who took part in the successful defense of Stralsund against Wallenstein's troops .
  • Pfandbergweg (South / Devin)
  • Philipp-Julius-Weg (Tribseer / Tribseer settlement)
Named after Philipp Julius (* 1584, † 1625); Duke of Pomerania-Wolgast. The dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast were the rulers of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund for a long time .
  • 17th June Square (Franken / Franken Mitte)
This square in front of the Stralsund Rügen dam station was named in 2003 in memory of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 . Here workers from the nearby people's shipyard in Stralsund had demonstrated.
  • Peace Square (Tribseer / Tribseer Vorstadt)
This square got its name immediately after the Second World War as a constant reminder of the horrors of war.

Today's Poststrasse ; once Landesherrenstrasse , leads past the main post office to the Neuer Markt .

  • Prohner Straße (Knieper / Kniepervorstadt or Knieper Nord)
Today the Prohner Straße leads towards the village of Prohn near Stralsund.
The street has existed since the middle of the 19th century and was initially called Am Landwege . In 1869 it was named Prohner Straße . The victims of the bomb attack on Stralsund on October 6, 1944 , among others, were buried in the central cemetery on the street . Stralsund's first skyscraper was built here in 1961 as part of the forced housing construction in the GDR .
  • Prosnitzer Wende (south / Andershof)
Named after the Prosnitz estate , a current part of the Gustow community on the island of Rügen .
  • Pulitzer Grund (Knieper / Knieper Nord)
Named after the Baltic island of Pulitz . This protected island is located in the Jasmunder Bodden. There is no direct connection to Stralsund.
  • Putbuser Weg (Franconia / Frankensiedlung)
Named after the town of Putbus on the island of Rügen .
