A Berger lamp , also known as a catalytic lamp , is an aroma lamp in which isopropanol is catalytically oxidized and evaporated with the aid of a coated porous ceramic head . Fragrances can be added to the isopropanol .

history

The Berger lamp was developed by the French pharmacist Maurice Berger at the end of the 19th century. He patented his further development of the French lamp Müller in June 1898 as the lamp Berger . In 1927 the rights were sold to the industrialist Jean-Jacques Failliot, who was able to increase sales of the lamps to 20,000 annually through targeted advertising campaigns after a short time. Aroma lamps were designed by Gallé , René Lalique , Saint-Louis and Baccarat , among others . During the Second World War , production fell sharply in 1943 due to the lack of raw materials and the partial destruction of the factories.

principle

To start, the protective cap is removed and the isopropanol (90%), which is transported to the ceramic head by a wick, is ignited. During a burning time of 2 minutes, the ceramic head of the lamp is heated by the open flame. The open flame is then blown out and a protective grille is placed over the ceramic head. As long as oxygen from the room air and isopropanol are available, catalytic oxidation of isopropanol takes place on the ceramic head, which keeps the temperature of the head at around 400 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the (perfume) isopropanol mixture also evaporates in parallel. At the same time, at the edge, which is initially up to 500 degrees Celsius, there is a catalytic oxidation of molecules in the room air. The oxidation of the isopropanol is ended by putting on a lid.

criticism

A partially claimed disinfecting effect against viruses has not been clearly proven.
