The Aprilia RS 125 is a light motorcycle / super sports bike from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia , which belongs to the Piaggio Group. It is an offshoot of the Aprilia works team's racing machine, which was successfully represented in numerous 125cc classes.

The RS 125 was built and sold from 1992 to 2012. In the 20-year construction period, the two-stroke engine types 122 and 123 supplied by the Rotax company came to different available power levels of the engines installed.

Aprilia sold the motorcycle in Germany in three performance levels: an 80 km / h version for riders under 18 years of age (which was discontinued on January 19, 2013), then a 15 hp version which (depending on the model) over has a deactivated exhaust control, a throttled manifold, a throttle valve in the exhaust and a modified carburettor nozzle and is drivable with the driving license class A1. The "Full Power" is the most powerful RS 125 with up to 30 HP depending on the year of construction. In the last RS built, an unregulated catalytic converter and a modified carburetor were used and a maximum of 24 hp was achieved.

Production was stopped in 2012. The main reason was that the two-stroke carburettor engine did not comply with the emissions regulations. The successor model has a four-stroke engine ( Aprilia RS4 125 ).

technology

A water-cooled and membrane-controlled two-stroke engine with a solenoid or pneumatically operated exhaust control served as the motor . The engine was produced and developed by the Austrian manufacturer Rotax .

1991–1997 Gs model

  • Rotax 123 engine with 31.27 HP at 11,500 rpm and 21 Nm at 10,800 rpm
  • The SP version had 34 hp and was limited. Likewise, the SP version had an improved fork with a replaceable steel spring and a different shock absorber.
  • water-cooled
  • 34mm flat slide carburetor (Dell'Orto VHSB 34)
  • diaphragm controlled
  • 144 kg empty weight
  • SEM ignition system

The enduro version is the Aprilia Tuareg Rally 125 . With a curb weight of 108 kg and a five-channel cylinder with a matching exhaust system, it achieves almost 33 hp at 12,000 rpm. It is similar to a thoroughbred motocross machine thanks to the outlet slide, which can also be controlled via the foot brake, and the chassis.

1995–1998 Mp model (MPA and MPB)

  • Rotax 122 engine (1995-2012) with 28.55 hp at 11,250 rpm and 21 Nm at 10,800 rpm
  • only officially distributed in Germany from 1997
  • water-cooled with 28 mm round slide Dell'Orto carburetor
  • In some cases, gray imports (MP0 1995–1997) were wrongly equipped with a VHSB 34 and entered in the papers as Rotax 123
  • diaphragm controlled
  • light facelift (MPB only)
  • Empty weight 141 kg
  • Nippondenso CDI

1999-2005 SF model

  • 21.5 kW (30 PS) at 11,250 rpm and 21 Nm at 10,800 rpm (SF0, 1999–2003)
  • 28.55 HP at 10,500 rpm and 19 Nm at 10,250 rpm (SF1, 2003-2005)
  • With catalytic converter, emission standard Euro 2
  • Dell'Orto round slide carburetor PHBH28, ø 28 mm
  • diaphragm controlled
  • 139 kg empty weight
  • Nippondenso CDI

2006-2007 Py model

  • 28.55 hp at 10,500 rpm and 19 Nm at 10,250 rpm
  • Unregulated catalytic converter, emission standard Euro 2
  • Dell'Orto round slide carburetor PHBH28, ø 28 mm
  • Empty weight 137 kg
  • new disguise
  • Nippondenso CDI
  • different fork to accommodate the modified brake
  • modified front brake (radal pump and radially bolted saddle)

Late 2007- early 2008 RD model

  • officially 11 kW (15 PS) at 8,500 rpm
  • technically possible 24 PS at 10,500 / min (not registrable / legally drivable)
  • U-Kat, Euro 3
  • Dell'Orto VHST 28 (with electronic sensors)
  • Empty weight 137 kg
  • Transitional model between PY and RM
  • CDI and ALS control box are replaced by an ECU from Piaggio

2008–2012 Rm model

  • 23.11 hp at 10,000 rpm and 18 Nm at 9,500 rpm
  • U-Kat, Euro 3
  • Dell'Orto VHST 28 (with electronic sensors)
  • CDI and ALS control box are replaced by an ECU from Piaggio

Since the engine from model MP is always the same, you can theoretically increase the output of all models to 30 HP by replacing some parts (exhaust system, exhaust control, carburetor nozzle), but this is illegal as this would no longer comply with the emission standards. Conversely, an MP could also be equipped with RM technology and thereby achieve EURO-3, but there would be a significant loss of performance.

Motorsport

Pulk ADAC Junior Cup 2011

The RS 125 has been used by young racing drivers up to the age of 18 in the annual ADAC Junior Cup since 1993 . The vehicles were almost series models and were allowed to have a maximum of 35 hp. The regulations stipulated that only the exhaust system in the form of an Arrow Challenge exhaust and the Metzeler brand tires could be changed. According to the regulations, two series of the RS 125 were approved. However, since 2014 only four-stroke engines have been driven in the ADAC Junior Cup, which is why the RS 125 is no longer used there.
