Drawing of a lampist

The lampist's tasks consisted mainly in the maintenance of kerosene and gas lamps , such as B. tank filling, lighting, flame regulation, cleaning etc.

Before electric light was introduced, kerosene lamps often took over the lighting in many areas. With the decrease in the number of this type of lighting, the profession of lampist moved more and more into other professions.

The last “pure” lampists probably came from the railroad , where mechanical signaling technology is still in use today. These signals are illuminated by gas light ( gas bottles on the signal bodies). However, this is increasingly being converted to solar energy .

Lampists were also z. B. responsible for the signal lighting of the (steam) locomotives when leaving the depot . Manufacturers and dealers of lanterns were also referred to as lanterns , their workshops and warehouses as lanterns .
